The Castle acts as the residence for the Dukes of Arcos, specifically Rodrigo Ponce de León, a Castilian nobleman and soldier, Third Duke of Arcos. His name brings to mind the Lisbon earthquake (1755), in which the wall collapsed, filling the moat with debris. It was then when this street came into being which the local inhabitants name New Street (Calle Nueva).

The building facing the castle is the Corregidor’s Palace, a type of chief magistrate. This task was entrusted with maintaining order and administering justice. The Palace is adorned with great beauty and features a courtyard and a belvedere that affords stunning views over the city..

Gossiping tongues decry that our Corregidor longed to spend an evening of passion with the female mil-ler, and to do so, instructed for wheat to be milled all night long. Nonetheless, the miller suspecting that something untoward would happen, decided to make his way to the palace, where he stumbled upon both of them in bed. Faced with this situation, without pause for thought, he adorned himself in the garb of the Corregidor and departed with the intention of seeking vengeance. The next day, the four parties involved reached an agreement to ensure that such events would never be repeated in the future.

As you can see, this Square is laden with history, now, my hearty companions, please do me the honour of walking with me to the next corner to continue your journey of discovery.
